Energy Reduction Project in Sheffield

Energy output significantly reduced in a University plant room

<<< Back to Recent Projects

Executive Summary

Sheffield Hallam University (SHU) needed a cost effective and practical solution to reduce energy output across its main plant rooms. In particular it wanted easily removable thermal insulation jackets to fit around awkwardly shaped and protruding equipment.

Within a week Cordtape Energy Management Systems Ltd had provided the University with a long-term solution by fitting bespoke, hand-made energy saving jackets which can be easily removed and re-fitted for maintenance purposes.

The University's Mechanical Engineer, Martyn Callaghan, needed to find a cost-effective and practical solution to reducing energy output over two campuses facilitating over 30,000 students and 4,100 members of staff.

Potential cuts in higher education budgets, the rising cost of energy consumption, and the possibility of another cold winter to follow that of 2009-10 were key drivers for Martyn's review of the University's insulating equipment. In addition, Martyn specifically wanted energy jackets that could be easily removed for maintenance purposes and could be tailored to fit around awkward and protruding pieces of equipment.

Following research into various providers of flexible, thermal insulation jackets, Martyn selected Cordtape as they offered the best price for the job, which involved, in the first instance, designing and manufacturing energy jackets for one plant room containing 67 different pieces of equipment including valves, flanges and a heat exchange.

Cordtape began the process by conducting an energy survey to record how much heat the plant room was currently losing. Cordtape's designers then took measurements of the pipe equipment and hand made the jackets at the company's Nottingham based premises. The following day a team of Cordtape's engineers revisited the site to install the jackets as well as showing SHU engineers how to safely remove and replace the jackets for maintenance purposes.

Within a week another energy survey was undertaken by Cordtape to record how much heat the pipes were now losing with the addition of the energy saving jacket. They then put together a user friendly report which calculated how much money and heat the university would save in the coming year.

Martyn commented: ‘I was extremely impressed by the combination of price, bespoke and comprehensive service that Cordtape offered. In addition, they turned the project around in a matter of days whilst taking the time to record our energy output so we could calculate our return on investment- which, I have to say, has exceeded our expectations.'

Alex Pettifer, the then Director of Estates at Sheffield Hallam University, added: 'Like Martin, I have been delighted with the whole outcome and Cordtape's professionalism throughout the entire service, and I would have no hesitation in recommending their services'.

Key benefits

  • SHU estimate that they could save up to £1000 over the next year on their energy bills.
  • The jackets are easily removable for maintenance purposes.
  • The job was carried out and completed with minimum disruption to university staff on-site.
